It was the marquee matchup many WNBA fans have been waiting for since their 2024 Final Four meeting: Caitlin Clark vs. Paige Bueckers. Both players have been in the spotlight since college and have made an immediate impact in the WNBA. Bueckers is having a historic rookie season, becoming the first Dallas Wings rookie in franchise history to be named an All-Star starter, joining recent No. 1 picks such as Clark and Aliyah Boston to achieve that honor.
Although Clark's numbers have decreased from her historic rookie season, her performance has been commendable enough to earn her the title of All-Star captain. The matchup between the two didn't disappoint.
The first quarter was a closely contested game with Clark scoring the Fever’s first points in the way she knows best with a 27-foot detonator from downtown. Bueckers displayed her aggressiveness early, scoring seven first-quarter points for the Wings as the rookie showed why she was named an All-Star starter by attacking the gaps the defense gave her like a savvy veteran.
The Fever dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Wings 36-15 to score 64 in the first half, which is the most points in a half for a WNBA team this season. Clark and Bueckers both had 10 apiece heading into the half. Despite Clark's nagging groin injury, the Fever's sophomore sensation continued unabated.
Clark contributed to the game in ways beyond scoring, providing seven first-half assists and pushing the tempo up the court to create easy baskets for her teammates, including a home run touchdown pass to Sophie Cunningham in transition as if she's an All-Pro quarterback. The Fever would secure a 102-83 victory through a well-balanced scoring attack, with all five starters finishing in double figures. Kelsey Mitchell (20), Natasha Howard (18) and Aliyah Boston (17) combined for 55 of the Fever’s 102 points.
Meanwhile, the Fever’s sixth woman, Sophie Cunningham, was a key contributor off the bench with six of her 13 points coming at a key point in the second quarter that sparked an 8-0 run and propelled the offensive momentum of the Fever. Clark finished with a double-double of 14 points, 13 assists and a career-high-tying five steals while still recovering from a groin injury.
She is the only player this season to achieve a 10-10-5 stat line. This marks her 17th career game with at least 10 points and 10 assists. On the other hand, the Wings have now lost three consecutive games by an average margin of +20. Bueckers continued being the bright young cornerstone of the franchise, finishing with 21-4-4 with two steals on over 50% shooting from the field and 50% from downtown.
Bueckers becomes the 15th rookie in WNBA history to record those numbers with at least 15 field-goal attempts. Some of the players on that list include Candace Parker, Lisa Leslie, Clark, and fellow UConn natives Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, to name a few. The future is bright for the WNBA as Caitlin Clark tops Paige Bueckers in their first clash as leaders of the WNBA's next generation.
As the league continues to expand and grow, these two will be some of the premier faces of the league’s evolution in what should be a compelling rivalry for years to come.
