The nights are drawing in, the weather has turned cold, and Mariah Carey is back on repeat. That can only mean one thing: the Premier League is entering its season-defining Christmas period.
Between Tuesday (December 2nd) and New Year’s Day, every Premier League team will play six matches—a sixth of the season compressed into 30 days. It’s a stretch that offers momentum for some and may crush the hopes of others.
A strong run can launch a team into spring with belief; a slump can derail even the boldest ambitions. So, with a third of the campaign gone and a crucial month ahead, how might this festive football feast reshape the Premier League picture?
The Title Race
Arsenal sit top with a five-point cushion over Manchester City. Back-to-back away draws at Sunderland and a 10-man Chelsea have slowed them slightly, but they remain firmly in the title fight. The question is not whether they’ll be contenders in January—it’s who will still be alongside them.
Manchester City have struggled for rhythm, and Saturday’s narrow win over Leeds won’t silence concerns. Still, only five points separate them from the summit, and a strong December could close that gap quickly.
Chelsea remains an outsider, but their investment and squad depth make them impossible to ignore. Aston Villa, level with Chelsea and flying, have impressed—though their thinner squad raises doubts about sustaining a title push through the winter grind.
The Champions League Battle
Just as last season, finishing in fifth place should secure a spot in the 2026-27 Champions League. It may feel wild to reward a team finishing a quarter down the table, but it keeps the league fiercely competitive—four points separate Brighton, in fifth, from Everton, in fourteenth.
For upstart sides like Brighton, Bournemouth, Sunderland, Brentford, and Crystal Palace, the festive fixture pile-up will test their depth—and could expose cracks.
Meanwhile, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Newcastle will expect to surge during this stretch and solidify their position in the Champions League picture.
For some managers, like Tottenham’s Thomas Frank, December could define their futures.

The Relegation Scrap
A third of the way into the campaign is a fair time to assess the survival battle. With roughly 36 points needed to stay up, December’s 18-point haul can’t be wasted.
Wolves, stuck on two points, already look destined for the drop. Beyond them, Burnley, Leeds, West Ham, and Nottingham Forest appear to be the most vulnerable teams. Each club knows that entering January in the bottom three leaves little room for error.
As always, a seemingly secure mid-table side can plunge into danger fast if Christmas goes wrong. If this month has a reputation, it’s that nothing stays still. Upon the arrival of the new year, aspirations for titles, Europe, or even survival may undergo significant transformations, whether positive or negative.
